Ethical And Fairly Traded Tourism Practices

Fair Trade in Tourism is a key aspect of sustainable tourism. It aims to maximize the benefits from tourism for local destination stakeholders through mutually beneficial and equitable partnerships between national and international tourism stakeholders in the destination. It also supports the right of indigenous host communities, whether involved in tourism or not, to participate as equal stakeholders and beneficiaries in the tourism development process.

While a strong knowledge base has developed in sustainable tourism, theoretical links to justice and ethics have been slow to emerge at the destination level, especially about fairness, equity and justice for disadvantaged local groups, including poor, minority and indigenous populations.

Justice Tourism Foundation (JTF) is engaged in promoting tourism that is ethical, fair, positive and authentic experiential educational and alternative, sustainable and socially responsible travel as a way to connect tourists with local communities while promoting the local economy and wellbeing of host communities in Uganda as well as raising awareness of sustainable tourism, advocacy and capacity building in the global tourism industry.

At JTF we focus on distributive justice, fairness and equity in the development and marketing of the natural and cultural heritage for tourism, as well as discriminatory and exclusionary practices toward that ethnic minority. We understand the positive impact that fair and sustainable tourism can have in local communities and aims to amplify visitor experiences, creating truly transformative tourism options for both tourist and tourism trade alike.

By choosing the ethical and fair tourism trade practice, travelers are directly contributing to the livelihoods of everyone involved in their trip, from the staff who work for the establishments they stay at, the communities they support and the suppliers who provide them with services.
